Research:
Before attending any interview make sure you do your homework. There is nothing worse than if the prospective employer asks: "Tell me what you know about our company" and you are sitting with a blank look on your face. The more you know about the company the more confident you will be.
The internet is a great resource for research.
Rehearse:
Go over your answers to commonly asked questions with a spouse, friend, relative, etc. Common questions could include some or all of the following:
- Tell me a little about yourself.
- Why have you applied for this position?
- Why have you left your last employer or why are you planning to leave?
- What skills do you feel you have for this position?
- Have you worked in a similar environment?
- Tell me about a situation you had when...
Make a Good Impression:
Here are some tips that will be helpful in making a good impression:
- Arrive early (typically 15 minutes)
- Dress to impress (look the part)
- Have a firm handshake
- Establish and maintain good eye contact
- Be prepared (have extra copies of your resume, references, etc.)
- Be a good listener and communicator
- Ask questions to the prospective employer
Leave on a Positive Note:
The manner in which you leave the interview is just as important as your first impression.
- Thank all parties involved in the interview for taking the time to meet with you.
- Ask a question – “When should I expect to hear back from you?” or “What is the next step in the interview process should I be selected?” By asking questions, you are reaffirming your interest in the opportunity.
- Ask for a business card so you can send a follow up thank you letter or email.
